Rooftop Solar in Malaysia

The Malaysian government has been supportive of the local production, adoption and utilisation of clean renewable energy as an alternative resource, particularly solar PV energy technology. Many incentives are branched across programmes and partnerships, such as the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, Self- Consumption (SELCO), the Supply Agreement of Renewable Energy (SARE) and the Green Income Tax Exemption (GITE). All of these initiatives benefit both producers and users of renewable energy and should be taken as a perfect opportunity to reduce overhead energy costs in the long run, especially in a capital-intensive industry.

Over the past few years, Malaysia has made some promising steps in the rooftop solar space. Net energy metering quota allocations have enabled rooftop solar users to profit and benefit from solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity generated while selling surplus energy back into the electricity grid. An additional 500MW of net metering capacity was opened for applications by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia in February 2021. The benefits solar power energy brings to the commercial and industrial sector are numerous; they cover multiple areas that will likely be addressed heavily in the current and future market.

ESG for Investor Relations

Rooftop solar installation for commercial and industrial businesses and companies provides a perfect opportunity to generate significant amount of savings to monthly TNB payments. The economic potential of such technology has seen significant improvements over recent decades, pivoted by local tax incentives such as the Green Investment Tax Incentive (GITA) and the comparatively cheaper manufacturing cost of solar panels, compared to a decade ago. The attractiveness of rooftop solar is growing, and the commercial business case for rooftop solar will continue to become more attractive as rooftop solar increasingly develops into a cost- effective energy solution. The case is propelled further with Malaysia being in a favourable geographical position – offering substantial solar irradiation and sun hours, combined with a significant urban rooftop estate. Malaysia is positioned to unlock even greater generation capacity in future.

The potential of rooftop solar is immense; there are, however, some physical limitations and challenges faced from installation of solar panels. A key challenge is that rooftops need to be of a certain size and design to be suitable for such solar installations. The more substantial the rooftop size and the less complicated its design, the greater the return on investment. On the contrary, oversizing installable capacity without a careful understanding of daily load profiles would result in energy wastage. This effectively results in a lower return on investment for commercial and industrial business company owners.

More About ESG & Renewable Energy

ESG: The Boom of Sustainable Investment in Malaysia

Amidst recent climate agendas and economic slowdowns, COVID-19 has accelerated ESG adoption worldwide, as environmental degradation and social inequalities became increasingly transparent during the pandemic.

LARGE SCALE SOLAR

Large Scale Solar (LSS), better known as solar farms – is essentially a large-scale application of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in a contained area.

Electricity generated from such systems can range from hundreds of kilowatts to thousands of megawatts.
